Otoscopy is the use of a hand-held video instrument to examine and treat the ear canals of our patients. The instrument, called an otoscope, has a tiny video camera that transmits images to a television screen and lights the ear canal. The video otoscope allows the doctor to examine the ear much better than a traditional hand held otoscope and allows the owner to see the ear canal as well.
With the irrigating function, debris can be cleaned deep within the ear that would otherwise be difficult to remove with simple ear cleanings. The video otoscope is also the best instrument for flushing behind a ruptured ear drum and for diagnosing tumors in the ear canal. The video otoscope can be used just like any otoscope for routine examinations, but is often employed in diagnostic or cleaning procedures for diseased ears.
